Somebody suggested to me that every leader should establish a “Performance Day.” I actually thought this was a bizarre and almost insane idea, because I believe everyday should be a performance day. So I tended to laugh it off as another fad, but the more I thought about the idea, I concluded it might just work for some leaders.
I have no idea what that person had in mind when he told me about such a day, but by now I have formulated an idea, which some leaders might just find useful. Now, the real reason I think some might find it useful is because they are failing to do some pretty basic leadership stuff. So, maybe this performance day idea can help them get their act together. If that is you, the listen up.
Here is what I would call “Performance Day.” I would set aside a day, where the entre team would meeting, and evaluate the performance of the unit. They would all be asked a few simple questions: 1) How do you think we are doing? 2) How do you know that? 3) What can we do to do better?
These questions are ones that each ands every leader should be asking, but by getting the team involved, it will help them to start to take ownership of the end results, and ultimately, how and what they must do to get the results they think are their unit goals. The good news is, they will all have opinions; the bad news is, many will be totally wrong. But, that then will give you as the leader the platform to talk to those issues.
The beauty of this simple “Performance Day” idea is that it will actually help you as a leader to focus the team’s efforts on evaluation and improvement of the team’s performance. That is a great step forward, particularly if your team is simply doing their job, and going home. Maybe you can get some passion into them.
